Many large corporates now utilise a standard Windows NT/2000/XP
desktop comprised of an automated Operating System build coupled
with a locked down desktop. This means that workstations can be
built very quickly and with little expertise, and that standard
software can be installed and automatically configured when the
user logs on. This also guarantees that machines built and installed
in this way will be identical in configuration, and the users have
no way of destroying their machine.
We can recommend ways of implementing and maintaining the standard
build, and more importantly ways of packaging and releasing software
to the user base. Requiring a thorough understanding of Windows
systems and application behaviour, packaging is not for the faint-hearted.
A solid understanding of the importance of shared DLLs and the HKLM\Software\CLASSES
section of the registry is required, as well as knowledge of tools
like NTFileMon and NTRegMon for when things don't work out as planned.
PCL has experience in creating software packages for blue-chip clients
using both Novell's ZenWorks software, Veritas WinInstall and Wise
for Windows Installer.
